First Snowmen

IMG_1116

Recently, the right combination of snow on the ground, a free schedule, fairly decent health and temperatures warm enough to make snowballs all came together. So, we were able to venture out as a family andIMG_1091 edited let Lauren, Drew and Jackson make their first snowman. We actually made two snowmen, one in the front yard and one in the back. Grandpa dubbed Alyssa's first snowman Herkamur a couple of years ago, so these were named Herkamur II and Herkamur V (because Alyssa is 5 - her logic; not mine).

It always makes me IMG_1070laugh to see the kiddos all bundled  up in their snow gear. First, there are the hats that seem to fall down over their eyes constantly. Then there are  the boots that seem to fall off all the time and make it impossible for them to walk around. Seeing them trying to walk in the snow with all IMG_1086of those encumbrances always makes me think of Ralphie in A Christmas Story who can't put his arms down after his mom bundles him up.

 IMG_1067

It always amuses me, too, when the kids go outside and seem to almost forget the snow is there sometimes. They immediately go for their favorite outdoor toys,  whether it IMG_1076be the swings or the cars. Then after a while they seem to realize that there is snow and they can do new things like riding in a  sled, or climbing mounds of it. That's when the real fun begins!

As it turns out, Dave did most of the work making the snowman. IMG_1107 It's not the first time we have been really excited to show the kids something new or teach them a new activity only to find out that we are the only ones excited about it. So I guess that would explain why both our snowmen are sporting the Amish look this year. We didn't put any finishing touches or clothing on them, so they all have blank faces. But it was still fun to say hi to our snowmen every day until they melted away.

Kids 231

The kids seemed to haIMG_1089ve a good time, until their runny  noses and cold hands and feet get the better of them (the boots they can't help, but the gloves they can keep on!).  It's funny  how they all seem to do their own thing. ForIMG_1079 the most part, Lauren just seems to stand there as she isn't too excited to be in the snow, but she is the first one in line to ride the sled. Alyssa goes and make snow angels (she keeps her skills sharp throughout the IMG_1087year by making them on the kitchen floor). Jack seems to get his  own little project and loves being outside so much that he cries when we make him come inside. Drew lovesIMG_1075 edited any kind of ball, so that includes throwing snowballs at everyone. He can't get enough of that (neither can his Daddy).

But the best part of all is that we finally get out of the house, get some fresh air, and the kids sleep very well that night after making some fun memories out in the cold. You can't beat that for free entertainment, huh?

God bless,

Amanda

  7. I love how you care so much for me that you always make sure I get breaks (or are you worried that someday I may walk off the job?)
  8. I love that your grammar skills are better than mine and you keep me on my toes with who/whom and ending sentences with prepositions (see #1).

  10. I love that you vacuum and mop the floors before I even notice that the are dirty.
  11. I love your amazing sense of direction and how when we get lost (because of me) you want to ask for directions - even when I don't!

  15. I secretly love that you beat me at everything (except air hockey), because I admire your skills at sports.
  16. I love that you care so much about your grass that you have been known to pull out the crabgrass by hand.
  17. I love that you cared so much for Laverne (first car), that it was so hard for you to give her away.
  18. I love that you are extra nice to me on days when I am working on the taxes and other paperwork (so you don't end up with the job).
  19. I love that you make the kids watch you play tennis on the Wii before they get to golf.
  20. I love how every day you make me laugh - sometimes while you are even asleep!

I could not be more blessed to have a better husband. I love you, Schlepo.

Love always,

  13. I love how you drop whatever you are holding when you get distracted and take off running for your next event.

Alyssa's 5th Birthday Party

This year, we decided in the fall that we were going to delay having Alyssa's birthday party. She really wanted to invite some of her preschool friends and neighbors, and we thought more people would come if we had it in January, instead of around her birthday which is December 15th.

So a couple of weeks ago, we headed over to a local gymnastics place and had a great time and made lots of fun memories. After being cooped up with the cold weather, it was so great for the kids to run and jump around. We were cracking up as their hair stood on end from the static electricity from the bounce house. We also had to laugh as the parachute lifted Lauren and Jack off the floor at one point while they were playing games with it. And last but not least, one of our dear friends was taking a picture and ended up taking an unexpected plunge into the foam pit. Needless to say, it was a very entertaining time.

We want to say a big thanks to the grandparents and adult helpers for giving us a hand to pull this off. We also want to show our appreciation to our neighbor, Dave, who did a fantastic job taking most of the pictures you'll see in a second. I hope this slideshow makes you feel like you were there!

(If you have trouble viewing this slideshow, click here.)

I still can't believe that my baby is 5! Kindergarten sign up is in a month!!! Unbelievable! That's even more of a reason to stop and savor moments like these.

God bless,

Amanda

PS Did I mention how much I loved not worrying about cleaning the house for this year's party?!

Daddy Daughter Dance

 IMG_1180IMG_1185 edited

Right now, Dave, Lauren and Alyssa are at a Daddy/Daughter Dance together, in honor of Valentine's Day. They looked so cute leaving together, and I'm not even jealous that my husband is on a date with two beautiful girls. Alyssa and Lauren were so excited and talking about it all day. They couldn't wait to put on their dresses that were "pretty and beautiful." They had so much fun getting ready and were twirling around in their dresses that made them feel like princesses. We even survived a major tragedy, when the purple ponytail holder that Alyssa had carefully selected broke.

IMG_1198

At the dance, they are supposed to have a snack, craft, and, of course, dance. Alyssa told me that she felt like they were going to have cake there. I didn't even tell her about the snack, so I'm not sure where that came from. But I can't wait to hear about how it went. I can just see the girls spinning around with their ballet moves, while Dave does his Axl Rose dance with them. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall! At least I got some pictures before they left.

Before I Had Kids I Never...... Part II

(In case you missed part one, you can click here to read it.)

  • knew that babies slept with their tushies up in the air.
  • walked into a doctor's office with a glob of oatmeal on the seat of my pants.
  • knew what grocery stores had carts that held 4 kids, and which ones offer free suckers, stickers and cookies.
  • thought of taking clothes to the dry cleaners as a big hassle.
  • saw anyone fall asleep in the middle of their lunch.
  • realized the importance of only using washable markers and paint.
  • knew that blowing your own nose is a way of declaring (a toddler's) independence.
  • thought I would have a child that would like cleaning the potties (thanks Scrubbing Bubbles Flushables!)
  • would have thought that toddlers can tell the difference between fake cell phones, remotes and keys and the real thing.
  • worked so hard to keep my kitchen clean, yet have it be the worst it has ever looked!
  • knew what joy it would bring to see my kids playing together or sharing a book.
  • thought about thanking my parents for teaching me how to spit out toothpaste.
  • had my fridge decorated so beautifully with original artwork.
  • knew that things like ear shape and how you sleep at night are completely genetic.
  • thought I could be broken down to the point of accepting my kids eating off the floor.
  • saw my dad or father-in-law wearing a Barbie band aid.
  • thought my husband would care so much if I put barrettes in my sons' hair or not.
  • realized what angels kids look like when they are sleeping.
  • thought about what a mess Play Doh makes or the fact that it contains wheat in it.
  • cleaned chocolate out of the clothes drier.
  • knew how many millions of things there are to throw temper tantrums about.
  • hung my coat in the closet with a child's hanger.
  • realized what a wise investment it was to get plastic nativity pieces.
  • appreciated how tough and yet adorable it is for 2 year old to try to walk around in boots and all the snow gear, let alone in snow up to his knees.
  • had someone come up to me with baby Jesus from the nativity and tell me that He has diarrhea.
  • thought about how little kids shouldn't say "butt" however, "but" IS ok to say.
  • knew what a big deal getting your first pair of underwear is.
  • heard a hip hop version of "Wheels on the Bus."
  • drove with a running commentary of everything I see coming from the seat behind me.
  • saw anyone run to throw something away in the trash.
  • knew what powerful tools reverse psychology, distraction and spelling to each other are to parents of toddlers.
  • knew how many crafts can be made out of food or food-related items (straws, popsicle sticks, etc).
  • thought that I would have a son that would go looking for such above-mentioned crafts to tide him over until dinner was ready.
  • knew how many different places a sticker can end up within one house.
  • had someone show me that bubbles come up in the water when you flush the commode.
  • knew how adorable it would be to watch all 4 of my kids "tip me over and pour me out."
  • considered I would want to ditch Velcro shoes in favor of ones with old fashioned shoestrings that my kids can't take off.
  • noticed what new kid movie must be coming out by the advertising blitz and themed kids meals at certain fine dining establishments.
  • thought about car seats and their placement in the vehicle as being yet another thing to fight about.
  • knew how many different kinds of sippy cups there were or contemplated which type would best meet my needs. Ditto for strollers.
  • thought I would refer to my spouse as "Daddy" all the time and forget his name.
  • cleaned up so many disgusting messes in my life!
  • had someone ask me if the white shirt that I was wearing was a onesie.
  • saw anyone make snow angels on my kitchen floor.
  • spent time searching in the store for socks with ruffled cuffs.
  • knew what a miserable pain it is to remove new toys from  their boxes, because of all the tape, twist ties and rubber bands they use to display it perfectly in the box.
  • stayed up all night because someone else made me do it.
  • knew that having a shirt with one pocket on it would drive my kids crazy and make them constantly ask where the other pocket is.
  • appreciated how priceless a kiss and a hug from a child is.

Leave me a comment on your additions to the list! I loved all the feedback last time.

God bless,

Amanda

Jekyll & Hyde Day

Yesterday was supposed to be a good day. Really, it was. First of all, I had my check and forms all ready to turn in so that the trio can go to preschool next year TWO days a week (thanks to a multiples discount we can get!) Also, you may have heard, Denny's was giving away free Grand Slam Breakfasts. So I had it all planned out. I was going to drop Alyssa off at preschool, and then take Lauren, Drew and Jack to meet my mom at a Denny's by her house. I thought it would be a great way to break up the winter monotony, and celebrate that Lauren and Drew don't seem to have any food allergies anymore and Jack can at least eat wheat now!

Enter snowstorm. On the way to take Alyssa to preschool (and, of course, we were running really late), we almost slid off road during what is normally a 3 minute drive. So that made Denny's a no go, and I was trying to convince myself that it was better not to eat all those calories anyway.

So then we got home, and as the kids were unloading from the van, I walked out to the mailbox to mail yet another letter about the accident I was in (back in November '07). I think a little angel whispered in my ear, "Keep your keys with you just in case." Yet, even after making this conscious decision - because I have just about seen it all from these kids and don't trust them a bit - I was still surprised at what happened next. Just as I was the farthest from the garage that I was going to get, down went the garage door. I felt like I was moving in slow motion to get back to the door, and by the time I got there, the door was all the way down. Did I mention that there was a bad snowstorm going on at this time? So I kept banging on the door saying, "Hit the button!!!" "Open the door!" I didn't even know who had locked me out (there is power in numbers!), so I couldn't even call a name. I knew I had the keys with me, so I didn't panic too much. But let's just say my Dad calls our house Ft. Knox for a reason - it is a pain to open the front door. But after a few minutes out in the snowy cold, someone had mercy on me and hit the button and opened the door. I didn't think any of my neighbors saw me, but I'm sure they were amused if they did. It seems to be yet another one of those sitcom moments that I seem to find myself in a lot lately. Sometimes I feel badly for our neighbors, because we haven't exactly done the best job of keeping up the house the last few years. But yesterday, I thought at least getting to laugh at us like that makes up for it!

So after that, we all went back in the house and went about our way. I set about cleaning up the breakfast mess, with a slight modification. The kitchen sink was clogged, so I had to rinse the breakfast dishes in the bathroom sink and I used wipes instead of the more environmentally friendly way of scrubbing down the kitchen table. But, at least I knew the plumber was coming after lunch.

Around 11am (an hour before I have to pick up Alyssa at preschool), Lauren lets me know that she has to use the facilities. She is doing so well with the potty training that I usually just let her in and then come back and check on her in a couple of minutes. Well, a couple of minutes later, she runs out to me and says, "Come see what happened." I thought that was a little odd as I had already heard the evidence being flushed away, but I knew I better check it out. She pointed to the toilet, and I thought said, "Look, it's blue." I thought that was strange, as all I saw was clear water. So I just kind of nodded my head. Then she got a little more emphatic and said, "No, it's blue." At least that's what I thought she said. I just played along and said something about the water. Then she got more frustrated and practically stuck her head in it trying to show me something. At this point, I noticed a toy on the counter that I hadn't noticed her bring in to the bathroom. I feared the worst. So I took a step back and sure enough, there was a screw from the "Build and Play" toy that she brought in there. She wasn't saying blue, she was saying screw!

Up until this point, I thought I did a pretty good job of handling all the curve balls and stress that had been thrown my way. But dealing with toilets like that completely grosses me out. I have cleaned up all kinds of messes since becoming a parent, but I don't do any kind of work with toilets (or clogs for that matter). Then I think I panicked a little bit. I was trying to think of a way to retrieve the screw using disposable tools, but I was drawing a complete blank. I think by then I also needed some adult conversation, too. Since Schlep was in class, I couldn't call him. So I decided to see if my old labmate would pick up the phone; he was always good with problem solving and engineering dilemmas. Luckily, he answered and helped me accept that I was just going to have to use a kitchen utensil that I could "take one for the team". Luckily, there was a pair of tongs in the drawer that were rusting and I had a dishwashing glove. So while I had some moral support on the phone, I plucked out the screw and threw away the sacrificial glove and tongs. Mission accomplished. (That was lucky for Schlep, as Plan B was to close off the bathroom until he got home to do the retrieving.)

I would also like to stop at this time and thank my friends on Facebook who offered me support and suggestions. I thought using a bread bag was an especially good idea. But best of all, it was good to know that someone was out there who cared. Thank you. Thank you very much!

At this point, I was thinking about how the day wasn't even halfway over and I wasn't sure if I could take whatever else it might bring. My imagination was running wild with what the plumber might find in the kitchen sink. At least I was too busy to dwell on it for very long.

I went to pick up Alyssa from preschool, and a friend offered to watch the kids in the van so I didn't have to unload them. That is such a huge hassle, especially on days with snowstorms, so I thought to myself that things were starting to look up. There was only one problem - I had let one of the other kids sit in Alyssa's carseat. She lost it! We had a lovely drive home. Sounds emerged from her "new" carseat that resembled an animal with a paw caught in a trap and provided the entertainment for the entire ride home.

Next, it was time to fix lunch and I really had it in for the environment and resorted to paper plates. It was really nice to have such a simple clean up! We finished just in time for the plumber to arrive while I was getting the kiddos ready for naptime. Well, 3 hours and $178 later, the sink was fixed. It turns out that the idiots who installed the pipes in the basement didn't brace them correctly, and they had a nice curve in them instead of being straight. So that is fixed now, too, and hopefully, our pipes won't get gunked up again. I'm not holding my breath, though.

During this time, I also called to check on the status of our the loan to refinance our house. I have heard of several stories where it has fallen through, because the appraisal came back too low. We had expected to hear something earlier, so I thought it might be bad news. At this point I figured I might as well get it all out of the way today. Well, it turns out that our appraisal came out great - even higher than expected. We should know in the next couple of days if everything went through, and then we can start getting estimates on getting our basement done. Yeah! Talk about my day taking a turn for the better.

So after that, things went pretty smoothly. We had fun playing golf on the Wii with the kiddos. It is hilarious to see how they swing. Or at least try to swing. We have to work our on putting a lot, though (especially before Uncle Mo comes for a visit). I am beginning to think the kids keep overshooting the hole on purpose, so they can get another turn, though.

The day ended well, especially when my husband gave me the night off. When I got home he had even vacuumed and mopped the floor! What a man! It just goes to show you that no matter how badly your day is going, it can always end well. And if not, you always get a fresh start to try it again tomorrow.

God bless,

Amanda
